Since mid-November 2024, reports of large, unidentified drones have sparked concern across New Jersey and neighboring regions, including parts of New York City, eastern Pennsylvania, and Maryland. Sightings, often occurring during nighttime hours, have puzzled residents and prompted investigations by the FBI, Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and New Jersey State Police.

Initial reports emerged from Morris and Somerset counties, with sightings expanding to include Bergen, Essex, Middlesex, and other New Jersey counties. The drones have also been spotted in New York City boroughs, Philadelphia, and Maryland, where former governor Larry Hogan claimed to observe dozens of large drones near his home. Witnesses described the drones as SUV-sized, often flying in groups, with lights that sometimes “go dark” when noticed. Some incidents involved loud humming noises or fixed-wing aircraft in the vicinity.

Sensitive sites like Picatinny Arsenal and Naval Weapons Station Earle have experienced drone incursions, leading to temporary flight restrictions. Other locations, including power plants, railroads, and emergency facilities, have also reported activity. On November 26, a medical evacuation helicopter was delayed due to nearby drone sightings, raising safety concerns.

Federal and state officials have expressed frustration over the lack of clear answers. Over 3,000 public tips have been collected, but authorities remain uncertain about the drones’ origin and purpose. While White House officials have suggested that some sightings may involve manned aircraft, they maintain there is no evidence of foreign involvement or immediate security threats.

Local lawmakers, including Congressman Josh Gottheimer and Senator Cory Booker, have called for improved drone regulations, tracking technology, and transparency. Meanwhile, Congressman Jeff Van Drew’s recent claim of an Iranian connection was dismissed by the Pentagon, which confirmed no evidence of foreign adversaries behind the incidents.

Investigations are ongoing as officials work to address the public’s safety and privacy concerns.
