On November 16, 2024, the first case of Clade Ib mpox, a more transmissible variant of the disease linked to outbreaks in Africa, was detected in California. Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral disease that causes a rash, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and sometimes severe complications, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems or pregnant women. While most cases are mild and resolve within a few weeks, the new variant raises concerns due to its potentially higher spreadability.

Clade Ib mpox was first identified in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2023 and has since spread across several African nations. With over 29,000 cases reported and more than 800 deaths as of September 2024, this variant has been categorized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a public health emergency of international concern. The WHO’s declaration on August 14, 2024, followed concerns that Clade Ib may have adapted to more sustained human-to-human transmission.

Mpox is typically transmitted through direct contact with infected body fluids or lesions, including sexual contact, and can also spread from animals to humans. There is currently no specific treatment for the disease, but smallpox vaccines have been shown to provide protection. Vaccination is recommended for high-risk individuals, and antiviral drugs like tecovirimat may be used to manage the disease, though their effectiveness remains uncertain.

As the global health community continues to monitor the spread of Clade Ib mpox, health experts emphasize the importance of surveillance, vaccination, and public health measures to prevent further outbreaks. The recent case in California underscores the need for vigilance as the disease spreads beyond Africa.
